Nurturing Your Ageing Cavoodle

Healthy Life for Your Cavoodle

Little Miss Polly turns 12 this year (2023) and seeing her age has been a little bit sad. She’s gone grey around her eyes, finds it a little harder to jump up on our beds and the sofa and she comes home a lot more exhausted from crazy playing with her furry friends.

So seeing her enter her ‘senior’ years, we’ve found she needs that little bit of extra care, attention, and understanding, just to ensure her comfort and well-being.

In this article, we’ll explore how to take care of your aging Cavoodle, covering areas such as nutrition, Cavoodle exercise, health monitoring, mental stimulation, and creating a loving environment. All to enhance your aging Cavoodle’s quality of life and make their golden years as joyful as possible.

Optimal Nutrition

We’ve found as Polly has aged, her nutritional needs have changed. We used to give her a cup of dry food as well as a few tablespoons of soft food however we’ve removed the soft food as it no longer agrees with her tummy. We also don’t allow anyone else to feed her e.g. at pet resorts, as this too seems to upset her tummy.

So as Cavoodles age, it’s possible that their nutritional needs may change. Consult with your vet to determine the best diet for your aging dog. Senior dog food formulas are often lower in calories to accommodate their decreased activity levels, and they may contain ingredients to support joint health, digestion, and cognitive function.

You can consider adding supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids or glucosamine, to support joint Cavoodle health if recommended by your vet but we’ve not gone down this path.

Exercise and Mental Stimulation

Polly still seems to be able to run around crazy but it exhausts her much more these days but regular exercise remains important to keep them physically and Cavoodle mentally stimulated.

As she ages even more, we will need to consider just how much she’s able to keep up with other dogs.

You may also find your aging puppy might need shorter walks, and more gentle play sessions. The important thing is to monitor their comfort levels during exercise and be mindful of any signs of fatigue or discomfort.

Regular Veterinary Check-ups

Frequent veterinary check-ups become even more crucial as your Cavoodle ages. Schedule regular wellness visits to monitor their overall health, including dental health, joint function, and any age-related issues. Discuss appropriate vaccinations, preventive care for common senior dog ailments, and any dietary adjustments that may be necessary.

Comfort and Mobility

Polly has started to experience joint stiffness. She has super comfortable beds (bed, sofa, and her doggy bed) that she seems to gravitate to depending on the day.

My animal-loving sister (cats, dogs, horses) has said we should consider using a ramp-up to our beds to help Polly but we’ll consider that in time.

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Just like aging humans, maintaining mental and emotional well-being is crucial for aging dogs. Engage your aging puppy in activities that provide mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys that require problem-solving. Maintain a consistent routine and provide plenty of love, attention, and reassurance to help them feel secure and loved.

Adapt to Their Changing Needs

As your Cavoodle ages, they may experience changes in their behavior, mobility, and sensory perception. Be patient and understanding as they adjust to these changes. You may also need to get used to the fact that you have an aging furry friend (we are). Doing things such as providing softer toys or modifying their home to make it more comfortable for them.

Unconditional Love and Attention

Above all, provide your aging Cavoodle with abundant love and attention. Spend quality time with them, engage in gentle grooming sessions, and offer an affectionate touch. Your presence and care will provide them with comfort, security, and a sense of belonging.

Caring for an aging Cavoodle requires compassion, attentiveness, and cavoodle adaptability.. By adjusting their diet, providing appropriate exercise and mental stimulation, regular veterinary check-ups, ensuring their comfort and mobility, and showering them with love and attention, you can make their senior years as comfortable and joyful as possible. Cherish the special moments with your aging Cavoodle and continue to create a loving and supportive environment for them throughout their golden years.
