Our daughter was five when we decided to add a puppy to our little family and after extensive research, we decided on a Cavoodle over a Bichon Frise. It was a tough choice!

In this comprehensive owner’s guide, we’ll dive into all the essential information you need to know about owning a Cavoodle.

History and Origins:

Let’s first delve into the Cavoodle’s history and origins. This hybrid breed originated in the 1990s and was primarily developed to create a cavoodle low-shedding and hypoallergenic companion dog. By crossing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, renowned for his affectionate temperament, with the intelligent and non-shedding Poodle, breeders successfully created the delightful Cavoodle we know and love today.

Physical Characteristics:

Cavoodles are small to medium-sized dogs with a charming appearance. They inherit traits from both parents resulting in a wide variety of coat colours and textures. Their soft, wavy, or curly cavoodle coats are often low-shedding, making them suitable for individuals with allergies. Their expressive eyes, floppy ears, and adorable faces contribute to their undeniable cuteness.

Polly is peach in color with super big eyes that often make you feel are looking deep into your soul.

Temperament and Personality:

One of the most appealing aspects of Cavoodles is their friendly and sociable nature. They thrive on human companionship and are known for their affectionate and gentle personalities. Cavoodles are great with children and make excellent family pets. They are highly adaptable and can easily adjust to different living environments, whether it’s a spacious house or a cozy apartment.

Polly is our shadow, she’s always following one of us around and will settle once she works out where she thinks one of us will remain for some time.

Exercise and Training:

While Cavoodles are not excessively energetic (one of the reasons we chose this breed), they do require regular exercise to keep them physically and cavoodle mentally stimulated. Daily walks, playtime, and interactive toys are essential to prevent boredom and maintain their overall well-being. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. Positive reinforcement methods, such as treats and praise, work best when teaching them basic commands and tricks.

They truly are an easy breed of dog to own. Polly’s always been active and our daughter would build up sand on the beach and have Polly jump over, that or makeshift jumps in our yard. The height she jumped, we thought she may have been a horse in a previous life 😅

Grooming Needs:

Cavoodles have a moderate grooming requirement to keep their coat healthy and free from matting. Regular brushing is necessary to prevent tangles and maintain their soft, luxurious fur. how to groom a cavoodle every six to eight weeks will help keep their coat in optimal condition. Additionally, their ears should be checked regularly for cleanliness, and their nails should be trimmed to avoid overgrowth.

Health and Care:

Like all dog breeds, Cavoodles are prone to certain health issues. Polly’s ongoing issue was her teeth which we have cleaned by the Vet every year!

While they generally enjoy good overall health, it’s important to be aware of potential conditions that may affect them, such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye problems. Regular vet check-ups, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise will help ensure a long and healthy life for your Cavoodle.

If you’re searching for a companion that combines intelligence, charm, and a loving nature, the Cavoodle is a perfect choice. This guide has covered the basics of their history, physical characteristics, Cavapoo temperament, grooming needs, and overall care. A happy and healthy Cavoodle will bring immense joy and companionship to your life, making them an ideal addition to any loving home.
